Les Bonobos: A Photoessay

Last weekend, I did something very different. We visited the Falls at Lukaya, which is also home to le site bonobo, a sanctuary for a remarkable and endangered species of ape.

Their feet resemble human hands, and they are the ape species most closely related to humans. They are treated by pediatricians (with pediatric medication), not veterinarians.

The reason for the "sanctuary" is for orphans. They are indigienous to the Equateur province of DRC, where they are often killed by hungry people for food.
